Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) is one of the most common dermatological problems encountered in day to day practice by Doctors all around the world. In recent years Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) has shown to be highly effective. FUE is a type of hair transplant where the hair is individually extracted from the donor area and then transplanted into the recipient area at an angle of 45 degrees to induce new hair growth. Several researches have shown it to be highly effective. But Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) has also come up as a viable solution, although there aren’t much researches to back this claim, but medical journals from all over the world are researching and showing a keen interest in it.
Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRP) technology is based on the recovery of a small volume of the patient’s own blood which is afterward centrifuged and activated to obtain an autologous formulation enriched in protein and growth factors. These are injected back into the scalp to increase hair growth and in conjunction with FUE, it has shown to be quite effective.
A recent research published in ‘Year Book of Dermatology-2019, Trichology’ (pp 6-8) showed its findings on 30 patients, 15 of who underwent conventional FUE and 15 who did FUE with PRGF. FUE + PRGF treatment had faster post-surgical crust healing and more hair fixation was noticed in PRGF during FUE surgery. Postsurgical inflammation period was also slightly reduced. Although at the end of the year both FUE and FUE + PRGF had similar hair quality and quantity, this research showed was of a shorter term. Longer research periods will reveal more light on the benefits of PRGF therapy.
